Monday Motivation: February #2

Haaappy Monday guys! I hope you all had a fab weekend! I'm super excited for the week ahead as I'm going to be posting lots of Valentine's Day related posts, so look out for those!

Since we're celebrating love this month, I thought it would be timely to share a striking article one of my friends showed me a while back. Personally, it shows what love should really be about! It's a wee bit long but trust me, it's worth the read.

Marriage Isn’t For You

Having been married only a year and a half, I’ve recently come to the conclusion that marriage isn’t for me.

Now before you start making assumptions, keep reading.

I met my wife in high school when we were 15 years old. We were friends for ten years until…until we decided no longer wanted to be just friends. :) I strongly recommend that best friends fall in love. Good times will be had by all.

Nevertheless, falling in love with my best friend did not prevent me from having certain fears and anxieties about getting married. The nearer Kim and I approached the decision to marry, the more I was filled with a paralyzing fear. Was I ready? Was I making the right choice? Was Kim the right person to marry? Would she make me happy?

Then, one fateful night, I shared these thoughts and concerns with my dad.

Perhaps each of us have moments in our lives when it feels like time slows down or the air becomes still and everything around us seems to draw in, marking that moment as one we will never forget.

My dad giving his response to my concerns was such a moment for me. With a knowing smile he said, “Seth, you’re being totally selfish. So I’m going to make this really simple: marriage isn’t for you. You don’t marry to make yourself happy, you marry to make someone else happy. More than that, your marriage isn’t for yourself, you’re marrying for a family. Not just for the in-laws and all of that nonsense, but for your future children. Who do you want to help you raise them? Who do you want to influence them? Marriage isn’t for you. It’s not about you. Marriage is about the person you married.”

It was in that very moment that I knew that Kim was the right person to marry. I realized that I wanted to make her happy; to see her smile every day, to make her laugh every day. I wanted to be a part of her family, and my family wanted her to be a part of ours. And thinking back on all the times I had seen her play with my nieces, I knew that she was the one with whom I wanted to build our own family.

My father’s advice was both shocking and revelatory. It went against the grain of today’s “Walmart philosophy”, which is if it doesn’t make you happy, you can take it back and get a new one.

No, a true marriage (and true love) is never about you. It’s about the person you love—their wants, their needs, their hopes, and their dreams. Selfishness demands, “What’s in it for me?”, while Love asks, “What can I give?”

Some time ago, my wife showed me what it means to love selflessly. For many months, my heart had been hardening with a mixture of fear and resentment. Then, after the pressure had built up to where neither of us could stand it, emotions erupted. I was callous. I was selfish.

But instead of matching my selfishness, Kim did something beyond wonderful—she showed an outpouring of love. Laying aside all of the pain and aguish I had caused her, she lovingly took me in her arms and soothed my soul.

I realized that I had forgotten my dad’s advice. While Kim’s side of the marriage had been to love me, my side of the marriage had become all about me. This awful realization brought me to tears, and I promised my wife that I would try to be better.

To all who are reading this article—married, almost married, single, or even the sworn bachelor or bachelorette—I want you to know that marriage isn’t for you. No true relationship of love is for you. Love is about the person you love.

And, paradoxically, the more you truly love that person, the more love you receive. And not just from your significant other, but from their friends and their family and thousands of others you never would have met had your love remained self-centered.

Truly, love and marriage isn’t for you. It’s for others.

Also, since we all know how much of a sucker I am for proposal videos, I've decided to share a few of my personal favorites with you guys!

Regardless of the number of times I watch these videos, I still cry every time! I don't know why I do this to myself but there's just something about proposal videos that give me hope in love and make me so happy!

Wishing you all a beautiful week ahead!

Kisses,

S

Monday Motivation: February #1

Well, here we are guys! We have reached the month of February. I know a few people who have a love/hate relationship with this month and I hope to change that to one that just revolves around love today. Yes, I went there, love - the dreaded four letter word.

Once we jump into February, Valentine's day talk is inevitable. It basically vomits on us all and begs for attention. It's nice to see people in love but sadly, during this time, I also notice a lot of single people beating themselves up over not having 'someone' to share this time with. Frankly, I think it's stupid and so, today's Monday post is dedicated to all those who think they need 'someone' to celebrate love.

"There’s so much more to life than finding someone who will want you, or being sad over someone who doesn’t. There’s a lot of wonderful time to be spent discovering yourself without hoping someone will fall in love with you along the way, and it doesn’t need to be painful or empty. You need to fill yourself up with love. Not anyone else. Become a whole being on your own. Go on adventures, fall asleep in the woods with friends, wander around the city at night, sit in a coffee shop on your own, write on bathroom stalls, leave notes in library books, dress up for yourself, give to others, smile a lot. Do all things with love, but don’t romanticize life like you can’t survive without it. Live for yourself and be happy on your own. It isn’t any less beautiful, I promise."

Have a lovely month ahead my beautiful readers! I love you all

What I Loved in January!

For the first time in a long time, I'm finding myself a little saddened to say goodbye to a month. January has been lovely to me for so many reasons that can't be put into words but for today, I'm going to be talking about the ones that can.

Blogging

I love blogging but this month in particular, I've really been enjoying it so much more! Work was quite stressful and blogging became sort of an escape for me. I've especially enjoyed blogging on my birthday week! You can read all the posts from there starting with my first post HERE! :)

Music

I enjoyed a lot of acoustics/slower songs this past month! Particularly, there's one song that's been stuck inside my head and it's 'Somewhere in Neverland (Acoustic)' by All Time Low! I've listened to it at least 50 times already and I'm still just as in love with it! A few other songs I've been loving are 'Honey and the Bee' by Owl City, 'Cactus in the Valley' by Lights ft. Owl City and 'I Miss You (Blink-182 cover) by 5 Seconds of Summer. They're perfect cuddle songs! ♡

Aside from all that, I've also fallen in love with the 1975! I've mentioned how obsessed I was with their song 'Chocolate' in one of my previous blog posts and I've been listening to their title album since then and it's incredible. I especially love listening to their songs on my drive back home from work (around 12am). The songs blend in perfectly with the street lights and the midnight sky.

Movies

My siblings and I have been doing 'movie night' mid-week for a bit of a pick me up. This past month we saw 'The Internship' and 'Safe Haven'. The Internship was hilarious and I loved it so much! It taught me that age doesn't need to stop you from reaching your dreams. Safe Haven was equally great and I particularly enjoyed the filming location. There's a canoe scene in the movie that's very reminiscent of the one in 'The Notebook' and I found that really interesting! It's a heart warming tale, as all Nicholas Sparks stories are, and Josh Duhamel plays the lead role so it's easily a must-see! ;)

Apps

I have a few apps I recently discovered and I know I'm going get a lot of use out of them so I wanted to share them with you guys! The first one that I'm most excited about is called 'Duolingo' . It allows you to learn a few different languages - for free! I'm currently trying to learn some French and I've really been enjoying doing that using this app!

Stars have always mesmerized me and I stumbled upon this app called 'Star Chart' and it's perfect if you love star gazing! If you live in the city, I know how hard it can be to see the stars but when you open this app, it acts like a virtual window to the universe. All you need to do is point your device to the sky, and it'll tell you exactly what you're looking at. It's crazy!

This last app I've already deleted from my phone but it was good to me so I thought I'd share it. I downloaded the '12 Days of Gifts' app sometime around the end of December and I got a gift every day for, you guessed it, 12 days. Some of the gifts were lame but for the most part, they were quite nice. My favorite gift was the movie Hugo! :)

Making salads

I experimented a lot with salads and dressings this month. I've settled with one I love and I hope to be sharing the recipe in a blog post soon! Here's a picture of what it looks like!

I especially love this salad because there's a ton of different textures and flavors and it really fills you up!

My Birthday 'Advent Calendar'

My little sister gave me the most creative and thoughtful birthday gift this year! She designed an advent calendar especially for me! She presented this to me in the beginning of the month and every day, I would open up a clue that led me to a gift. I mean, come on, getting a gift everyday? What more could you wish for!? So Sheila, if you're reading this, thank you! You're the sweetest little sister anyone could ever ask for!

Finally, I wanted to share a few pictures from my birthday! I had lunch with my family and chilled by the beach for most of the day. It was freezing but it was beautiful.

How was your January? I hope it was equally great, if not better! Share your favorite memories/things from last month in the comments below, I'd love to read them!

Kisses,

S

Monday Motivation: January #4

Good morning my beautiful readers! Is anyone else aware that it's the last Monday of January? Just like that, my favorite month of the year is approaching it's finish line. However, I had a lot of fun here on my blog over the past week! If you followed me throughout my birthday week, thank you! It was quite challenging for me to put up a post every day since we all know I'm not quite the regular blogger (heh heh ^_^)! HERE is my first post if you're interested! :)

For this week's Monday post, I'm going to be sharing some of the songs I've really been into lately! I listen to them as I'm getting ready and also while I'm doing chores. They put me in such a good mood!

Lastly, I also wanted to share a video that made my heart smile!

What are some of your favorite songs to listen to right now? Tell me in the comments below! I hope you all enjoy the last few days we have left of January!

Kisses,

It's Just A Number

I'm turning 23 today and I know that number doesn't sound big to many (or maybe it does? I don't know!) but 15-year-old me would definitely say it was. When I was younger, I pictured people this age to already have their life solidly planned out and actually acting out on those plans; I'm talking career, marriage, kids - all that scary stuff. I pictured them to be serious and stressed (that last part may apply to me) but alas, here is 23-year-old me, sitting in bed, stuffing my face with dessert at 2am (you can't say anything it's my birthday okay!) and still just unsure as I was about the direction my life is going in. Don't get me wrong though, I have big plans but life doesn't always like to work with me so I've had a few setbacks. That's not my point today though. What I really wanted to let you guys know is that you can't let a number define who you are. So what if you're 30 and not yet married? And so what if you did get married at 18? Maybe you do have your life figured out, and you just turned 13. Or maybe you still don't have it figured out at 50. It really doesn't matter! They're just numbers. Sometimes we get so consumed by the number, we forget to celebrate life. Life, although SO confusing most of the time, is still the most precious gift we're given and if we can't learn to at least appreciate it, what are we really doing with it?

If I were to share anything with you that I've learned over the past 23 years, it's that it's not the number that counts but the life behind the number. So quit worrying about your age and just embrace it. Go do something that makes you happy, no matter how old you are. ♡

We've finally reached the end of my birthday week! I hope you enjoyed reading through my posts and found it somewhat interesting! To close everything off, here are a few awkward pictures from my childhood! ;)

Advice to My 16-Year-Old Self

16-year-old me was a girl who was quite negative and very unsure of herself. Inspired by the book "Dear Me: A Letter to My Sixteen-Year-Old Self", I wanted to write some advice that I wish 16-year-old me could've received at the time.

1) You're beautiful, despite what society tells you. Everything you think is 'wrong' with you is only setting you apart from the rest of the world.

2) You have more potential than you sought yourself out to believe. By all means, follow your dreams and don't let anyone else decide your future.

3) Black eyeliner does not make you as cool as you think it does!

4) Enjoy going to bed early. Sleep will become a luxury you won't always be able to afford!

5) That boy you're crying over? There's going to be a lot more of that ahead. Take everything as a learning experience. It's all preparing you for something amazing. You're going to realize that you're actually much stronger than you believed.

6) Finally, you're just a kid. It's okay to make mistakes. In fact, it's the perfect time to make them. Lighten up, and don't be afraid of going out of your comfort zone once in a while. You'll discover great things!

What piece of advice do you wish you could give your younger self? Share it in the comments below! I like to think I grew up and became wiser but the reality is that sometimes, I still see that same unsure 16-year-old girl when I look into the mirror some days. We're all still growing up and I can attest that even though I'm turning 23 tomorrow, I still can't say that I know absolutely everything there is to know about the world and I guess that's the best part about growing up - not knowing and always finding out.

Kisses,

S

When I Was Young: Favorite Book Series

Reading books has been one of my favorite things to do since I can remember! The only thing I regret was not being able to keep them all in one place. Today, I wanted to share some of the books I loved to read when I was younger. By the way, I can't believe we're halfway through this week (we're at day 5 of my birthday week already!!). I've really been enjoying blogging every day! :)

 Goosebumps by R.L. Stine

R.L. Stine was definitely my favorite author growing up! I loved every single book I read that he wrote and it always kept me on my toes. The Goosebumps series in particular was the one I was most into! I would breeze right through them. I still have some I've managed to keep and I really wanna read them over again!

♥ From the Files of Madison Finn by Laura Dower

I remember reading these books every time I was on summer break! I liked how these books felt more like diaries and I was really attached to Madison because I could relate a lot to her! There was even one time I literally cried because I finished one of the books in less than a day and I didn't have any more to read! Haha!

♥ Nancy Drew

When I was in grade school, we had a 'library' class where we basically just spent the hour at the library! It was my favorite class. We got to keep our own library card in case we wanted to borrow books and I always picked up Nancy Drew books to take home! Sometimes I'd go for the Babysitters Club books but Nancy was way more interesting! I loved her curiosity and how she was always so determined to solve a case!

♥ Various 'witch' books

Sadly, I can't remember the exact title of these books but I used to be really into books that had to do with magic and witchcraft! I think it was called the 'Spelled' books or something like that but wow guys, they were really good! The story revolved around a teenage witch who recently acquired her powers and it follows her trying to stay normal while still keeping in tact with her traditions. It's hard to explain but it gives you a peek into what it's like to be a witch! I mean, if you believe in that kind of stuff.

♥ Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

Last but most definitely not the least, the Harry Potter books! I started reading these books because of my aunt. She got me my first Harry Potter book and insisted that we read it together. It was funny because it never worked out and she was always a step ahead. It sort of became a tradition and every time a new Harry Potter book came out, she would get it for me. The one I enjoyed reading most was Prisoner of Azkaban! It was the one that was most difficult for me to put down. I'd like to say I read all the books but I'd be lying! I stopped at the Order of the Phoenix and just started watching the movies from then. I am thinking of starting it over again though!

I love books. They allow me to escape into a world that's created by my imagination alone. Over the years, my genre preference has obviously changed but my love for reading is still just as strong, if not stronger. Do you like to read? What are some of your favorite books? Please share them with me in the comments below! I'm always looking for something new to discover! :)

Kisses,

S
